The Funny Sad of Your Life™® (2023/24), ca. 50

nostalgic songs from a time after capitalism
for tenor and ensemble with electronics

on texts based on advertisement slogans, written by the composer

With The Funny Sad of Your Life!™®, the German/Danish composer and singer Mathias Monrad Møller, together with Ensemble Garage, takes the dilemma of late-capitalist affluent societies as the starting point for a series of ironic love songs. His ‘Lovesongs’ are based on poems that Møller has compiled from advertising slogans: cheap poetry that become ironic hymns to capitalism. Møller’s dystopian ‘songs’ resonate back to us from a future in which capitalism no longer exists, but in which you long for it; because you were worth it.

first performed by Ensemble Garage and me, on 26th of October at Alte Feuerwache, Cologne

FINAL ORDERS

All the news that were fit to print

were built to last
never went out of style

You cared enough to send the very best

went further, obeyed the thirst

I reached out, tried to touch someone

Challenged everything
And we were done.

Good things would come to those who’d wait.

You tried harder
A diamond was forever
